SSN No Match

Sometimes, the SSN Address Trace search will reveal ‘SSN Not Issued.’ This is what we refer to as a No Match result.

This does not necessarily mean the SSN was not issued to your applicant. The SSN Address Trace does not validate if an SSN was issued to someone.

The SSN Trace / Address History search is trying to determine if the name / SSN entered into our system matches the name / SSN that’s on file with the three credit bureaus and if a match exists, we can then run a county criminal search in the counties that the credit bureaus list as current and prior addresses for this person.

The No Match result is common with people between the ages of 18 and 24 but some people don’t have any credit history.

It’s also possible they have recently changed their name (maiden to married or married to maiden, or some other reason) or they are using a nickname. The name being entered should match the name shown on the person’s SSN card.

You can also get a No Match result if the name or SSN entered into our system is off by even one letter or one number.

In fact, sometimes you will see a completely different name on the SSN Address Trace. Most likely, this could be a co-signer or it could be that a creditor incorrectly enetered the SSN when creating a new entry on the person’s credit file.

It’s also possible that the person has been the victim of identity theft and now their SSN is associated with someone else’s name on the credit bureau files. To discover if this is the case, the person would need to open an investigation directly with the credit bureaus.

To speak with someone at each of the three main credit bureaus, an applicant call the following phone numbers and follow the phone prompts.

  • Equifax: 1-888-548-7878 – (Press ‘3’)
  • TransUnion: 1-800-916-8800 – (Press ‘1’ if english >> say ‘dispute
credit report’ >> don’t press anything when it asks for zipcode >> wait
    to be transferred to human)
  • Experian: 1-800-493-1058 – (Enter ‘SSN’ and possibly ‘ZipCode’ >>
Say ‘Credit Questions’ >> Say ‘Different Question’ >> wait while you
    are transferred to someone)

When you get a ‘SSN Not Issued’ result, the county criminal search will run in their current county of residence, based on the home address they enter in the online invitation portal – or the home address you entered if you placed a manual order.

You can ask them what counties they have lived in during the past 7 years and then you can manually order a county criminal search in these counties.
